Exploring Finland: Magical forest of Jämsä

Exploring Finland: Magical forest of Jämsä

The weather was gloomy, and there was not much to do within the four walls, so I thought it might be the perfect time for a road trip adventure. And when you live in Finland it’s easy to arrange. All I needed was a car and a driver. Luckily, I had both.

It was not just a random road trip. We went on a mission… Well, actually we hoped to see the Jämsä waterfall but since we didn’t find any information in the internet on how to get there, this trip turned into a mission. Mission impossible, to be exact.

When the road that was supposed to take us to the waterfall ended, we got out from the car and continued our journey by foot. Walking down the path we soon entered the forest. And not just any forest but magical forest. I know, it probably sounds ridiculous, but I have never seen anything like it before. Well, I saw something similar in the Narnia movies but never in real life. Of course, I haven’t met a centaur, forest nymph or any other mystical-mythical creature on my way for that matter… but maybe they were just hiding and didn’t want anyone to see them.

The forest closed behind our backs like a massive door, on both sides there were bare rocky walls, in front of us laid uncertainty. Yet the level of my excitement grew with every step we made.

We silently moved forward, carefully stepping over thick branches and avoiding fallen trees. I was looking around with my mouth opened, enchanted by the raw beauty of nature. That’s how the prehistoric forest might have looked like.

While walking through this forest, I immediately recalled phrases from the fairy tales and fantasy books like “no man has ever step foot in”, “absolute silence reigned” or “you couldn’t even hear the birds sound”. Another thing that came to my mind was one of my favorite books “The Lost World”, written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. At least I wouldn’t be surprised to see a dinosaur there.

Soon, I felt that my feet began to sink in the ground, making funny squishing sound. “Looks like a pond is nearby,” thought I. My guess was quickly confirmed, a tiny pond appeared nearby.

We also noticed a hidden path not far from it and we decided to follow it. Although I must admit it wasn’t easy thanks to the wild ferns and protruding roots of the trees and other plants. But it didn’t stop us. On the contrary, it made us more eager to reach the mysterious destination.

Our stubbornness was soon rewarded. Path took us to the gap in the rock. And there inside the gap we saw many big stones that were formed in some sort of staircase, which led us on top of the cliff.

It was an incredible, one of a kind experience! And I cannot describe how happy I am that we didn’t find the Jämsä waterfall.

Hope you enjoyed it!
