After watching Pirates of Caribbean, The Curse of the Black Pearl back in 2003 I got obsessed with the wooden ships, and ever since I was hoping that one day it will be possible to sail one. I also remember how excited I was being onboard the Russian frigate Shtandart during the Turku Tall Ship Races in 2017. If someone asked me then would I leave my 9 to 5 job and join the crew for a minimum wage, I would happily say yes without any hesitation.
And when I saw Flipper Uno in Puerto de Los Gigantes, I felt like a little girl who knew that her dream is about to come true.
I bought a ticket from one of the tourist attraction offices in Los Gigantes. There were two options available at that time. One was 3.5-hour tour in the morning, around 11 A.M. The other 2.5-hour long, starting 2.30 P.M. I took the second option because it was cheaper. It cost only 20 EUR per person. And that price included soft drinks, beer and wine and the food.
The salesman assured me that I will see the dolphins for sure and it’s 100% guaranteed. I was skeptical and told myself, “I’ll believe it when I see it”. But even if I won’t, no big deal. In the end it didn’t really matter to me whether I’m gonna see the dolphins or not. Main reason why I was interested in this tour was the Flipper Uno itself and the ultimate sea adventure as I like to call it.
I came to harbor early, so that I would have time for a beer before the trip. I stopped on my way to the bar to watch the fishes swimming under the boats, probably searching for food. And I was just about to continue my journey when I saw a small skate. I couldn’t believe my eyes! Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen skates before but only in Helsinki Sea Life aquarium but never in the wild.
Sadly, I was too slow to make a video or photo of it.

When everyone got on a ship, crew told us about the safety onboard and after that we were ready to go.
The scent of the fresh sea breeze, the sound of the waves, the warmth of the sun’s rays. And the pirate flag blowing in the wind. I felt like I was watching Pirates of Caribbean in 4D. Even more than that, I felt like I am part of the movie. It was incredible!
And just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, someone screamed: “Dolphins!”. I rushed to the starboard to see them, and there they were, eight or ten bottlenose dolphins. As soon as they’ve noticed Flipper Uno, they started racing beside the boat.
It brought me indescribable joy to see them wild and free. There is nothing better than seeing wildlife species in their natural habitat.
After the race with the dolphins we made a U-turn and sailed closer to Los Gigantes, to see the famous cliffs in all their glory:
We then stopped in Masca bay for a swim.
Jumping from the ship into the water was awesome! I forgot about my age and forgot who I am. I was filled with excitement, and I laughed without a care in the world. Strangely, I can’t recall whether the water was cold or warm. I bet it felt warm because of the adrenaline rushing through my veins. Flipper Uno turned me into a kid! I don’t even remember the last time I had so much fun.
In the end of our trip the waves grew bigger, and it was easy to feel when the boat was making its way through them. Few people got a seasickness. The staff was acting fast and provided them with the bags and water. They also moved them in the back on the ship, where the waves didn’t feel so rough. The crew was great, competent, friendly and welcoming. And they all spoke good English.
So, if you want to come on this tour or any other tour in the opened sea for that matter, but you are afraid of getting sick, then remember to take motion sickness pills in advance. Also wear a hat and use a sun lotion. Better safe than sorry.
As for me… I love the Ocean. I love the waves. And when we said goodbye to Masca bay, I moved to the bow and leaned forward. I gazed at the clear blue water and smiled; and at that particular moment I thought that I am the happiest person on earth.
