My eyes saw the ocean scenery, saw the mountains, palms and cactuses, yet my brain was still in trance and couldn’t process the information. It refused to believe that I was on the Canary Islands. And no wonder! I haven’t had much time to prepare myself emotionally for this vacation. That’s why looking at the Tenerife landscape I felt like I was in a dream, a beautiful magical dream. It felt surreal. And I was afraid that if I close my eyes even for a moment it will all be gone.
I wanted to make sure, so I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, counted till ten and opened them again. To my surprise, it was not an illusion, it was real. I was in Paradise!
We left our things in the apartment, changed our winter clothes to something light and summerish and went for a ride. We wanted to get to know the area and check what it had to offer.
Our first stop was Puerto de Santiago:
It was so relaxing to simply sit there on a bench, listen to the sound of the ocean and not to think about anything while watching a hypnotizing dance of the mighty waves.
And since we still had some time left before the sunset, we decided to drive more higher and visit the famous mountain village Masca.
The distance between Los Gigantes and Masca is relatively short but getting there is not as easy as it might seem. First of all, the mountain road to Masca was the scariest road I’ve ever been on. It’s super curvy, extremely narrow and the concrete fence was too low in my opinion and it didn’t make me feel safe at all. But most scariest moment was when we were passing the tourist bus, because there was hardly any room for the maneuvers. Don’t know who was more scared during this road trip, my husband who was driving, or me who was staring down the cliff and seeing an imaginary car rolling down. Let’s just say it was quite an adventure!

Was it worth it? Definitely!

Though by the time we reached our destination the sun was already setting. So, unfortunately it was not possible to make good pictures of Masca village. But it doesn’t really matter because the view here is amazing at any time of the day.

Although, if your goal is to make stunning shots of the Masca with a proper lighting, then I’d suggest coming here in the morning.
On our way back we stopped at the viewing point on top of the mountain to make few mind-blowing sunset photos. And when I say mind-blowing I really mean it. I got out of the car, walked to the edge of the cliff and just stood there, looking at the magnificent vista with my mouth opened. It truly was the best sunset I have ever seen in my life! It was an unforgettable experience!

I especially like the last photo. Two mountain peaks look like the floating islands surrounded by the fluffy clouds. It can easily be a decoration for some fairy tale movie. I wouldn’t be even surprised to see the flying dragon who has just left its cave.
You can check out the short Masca trip video on my YouTube channel.
And that’s the car we rented from AutoReisen…

Hope you enjoyed it!

Lovely photos, worth the drive for sure! When I was there, hubby drove and the traffic seemed to be so hazardous that I refused to even try.

We mainly had problems with the tourist buses that were coming back from Masca. It was very scary… but we were both too stubborn to turn back, so we just continued the struggle 🙂
