Turku Medieval Market 2017

Performance medieval style, Turku, Finland

Every year people all over the country are coming here with families to spend a day or two, or even the whole weekend. And I am one of those lucky ones. I really do love Medieval Market. I think it’s an awesome event which I would describe as a “window to the past”. Or even “The Time Machine”!

Turku (Åbo in Swedish) is another Finnish gem. It’s one of the six oldest medieval cities, it was founded in the 13th century. More than that – Turku was also the first capital of Finland.

Every year people all over the country are coming here with families to spend a day or two, or even the whole weekend. And I am one of those lucky ones. I really do love Medieval Market. I think it’s an awesome event which I would describe as a “window to the past”. Or even “The Time Machine”! Because every time I come here, it feels like a mini trip to the medieval ages. Don’t get me wrong, I am more than happy to live in the 21st century… but sometimes I wish to escape civilized world and go on a little adventure. And yes, I do know that medieval time was nothing like it was described in Sir Walter Scott’s “Ivanhoe” – beautiful and romantic… it was more like Game of Thrones – cruel and scary. But hell with reality, I prefer to see it as it was written in the fairy tales.

What I like most about this event? Well… Everything! The atmosphere, the costumes, handcrafted goods and of course food and beer… M-m-m… Yummy!

I like to wander around, to walk through the rows of shopping stands. It makes me feel like I am a child once again – getting easily excited by simple things like… caramelized or “chocolized” apples…

What to eat beside sweets and nuts? How about roasted pork?

Yummy!

One portion of pork did cost 12-13 euros. A bit pricy if you ask me. But God it was good! They also offer kalja – homemade beer (low alcohol level).

Other choice is traditional loimulohi – so called blazed salmon:

Or grilled sausages:

But if you prefer to sit back, relax and enjoy your meal without a rush then there are couple of cafes and restaurants in the area. We choose GastroPub Löytö because it has a nice terrace just next to the stage where medieval performance took place.
